In 1987, Mr. Farris formed a partnership with the Rank Group Plc, which resulted in the creation of Rank Hotels North America. The company was renamed Quorum Hotels & Resorts in November 1994. Before this, Farris spent 12 years with Metro Hotels, a Dallas-based hotel development and management company. He last served as Executive Vice President of Operations and was responsible for the company's hotels, independent restaurants and hotel development efforts. Previously, he worked for several years as Metro Hotels’ Chief Financial Officer.

Before joining Metro Hotels, Farris served with ITT-South Florida Development as Chief Financial Officer and with ITT Sheraton as Controller of the Sheraton British Colonial. Farris also held various management positions with a Dallas-based hotel company that owned the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, the Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas, the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, the Emerald Beach hotels in Nassau, Bahamas and the Hong Kong Hilton.

Farris has previously held positions of Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the American Hotel & Motel Association (AH&MA) Educational Institute, Chairman of the Board of the American Hotel Foundation, Co-Chairman of the AH&MA's selection committee of financial management and the audit committee of the AH&MA. He is a certified hotel administrator (C.H.A.), a certified public accountant (C.P.A.) and a graduate of the University of Texas systems.
